Thor was the Scandinavian and Germanic god that indigenous Northern European tribes appealed to for protection. His name in Runes was carved and written on numerous objects. Miniature replicas of Mjöllnir, the weapon of Thor, became a defiant symbol of Norse paganism during the Christianization of Scandinavia. Mjollner was a magical hammer which, when thrown returns to Thor's hand. It also has the power to throw lightening bolts.
Stories of Thor's exploits are predominant from the earliest surviving written accounts of the indigenous Germanic tribes to over a thousand years later in the late Viking Age.
Thursday is named after him. (Thor's Day)
